Using a product that doesn't intentionally clog the skin's pores and inhibit one of the body's natural functions seems like the way to go, but for those of us who definitely sweat and don't just "glisten," that can be a pretty terrifying commitment to make. And while I'm sure the beauty editors compiling lists of their favorite natural deodorant suggestions have the best of intentions, I personally am more inclined to try out an option that one (or many) of our passersby uses and swears by every day. These are the good-for-you deodorants that passersby have tried, loved, and trusted to keep them dry.
Weleda Natural Deodorant
recommended by Fariha Róisín, Sunny Shokrae, Jasmine Imani, Julia Sherman, Zoe Beyer, Olivia La Roche
This deodorant is formulated without aluminum and leaves you feeling fresh. The effective, non-aerosol spray invigorates and refreshes as it eliminates the bacteria that causes unpleasant odors.
“I’ve really been into natural deodorants after realizing how toxic most of them could be and how they correlate to breast cancer. Weleda is great (and it actually works!)” – Sunny Shokrae
"'I never believed that natural deodorant worked until I met Sunny Shokrae, who swore by it during our shoot. I liked that it was sage—people are always telling me I should burn sage, so this was my compromise. Turns out it's the best deodorant I've ever owned and I've been converting all my friends since." –Clémence Polès
Aesop Natural Deodorant
Recommended by: rawan rihani, jessie webster, ly ngo, Marawa Wamp, Shawana Grosvenor
Aesop's spray deodorant contains eleven essential oils that help neutralize body odor and is scented by earthy vetiver. Fun fact: vetiver is known for its calming and grounding effect on emotions. So instead of literally sweating the small stuff, you can take a quick sniff of your pits and chill out.
"I switched to Aesop deodorant a couple of years back. No more aluminum in my armpits!" - Marawa Wamp
"My most recent discovery is the Aesop Deodorant; I love the scent and also wear it as a perfume too." - Shawana Grosvenor
Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant
Recommended by: Anna Deutsch, Tuesday Bassen, Molly Surno
The eucalyptus extract in this deodorant provides all-natural antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. According to Malin + Goetz, switching from a traditional antiperspirant to a natural formula may send your pits into overdrive as your pores become unclogged, so give your body two weeks to adjust (and maybe avoid wearing grey in the meantime).
Soapwalla Deodorant Cream
Recommended by: Maura Walters, katie garcia
Made with superfine vegetable powders and clays plus lavender, peppermint, and tea tree essential oils to absorb moisture and inhibit bacteria, this light, vegan formula feels a little like cake frosting to the touch. It’s so clean you can use it as a moisturizer and even as a (pretty fantastic) hair texturizer, too. The highest quality organic, foodgrade ingredients combine to create something wildly effective yet so gentle even the most sensitive skin can use it.
"I decided to try natural deodorant a few years ago after reading one too many scary articles about the dangers of aluminum, and Soapwalla Deodorant Cream is insanely effective. I have no idea how a natural deodorant is so good at warding off B.O.—it’s better than most antiperspirants." - Maura Walters
