on her morning routine

I usually wake up around 8:00 AM for work, stretch, and do a set of sun salutes if I have time. I’ll boil some water while I jump in the shower and then drink a cup of hot water with lemon juice to jump start my digestion for the day. I usually meditate during my commute to work and then make a teapot of pour-over coffee to drink while I check my emails.

on her personal style

I tend to dress in mostly white, neutrals, and black. I’ve tried to lighten it up a bit and add more color recently. Mixing textures is always fun, or slight variations in tone and color within some layers. Fall is definitely my favorite season to dress for, I usually mess around with different lengths of pieces or unexpected combinations.

Almost all of my clothes are vintage or from the thrift store or inherited from my mother. The only pieces I buy new at this point are some basics from Uniqlo or shoes to replace my go-to pairs: Adidas Spezials and Doc Martins chelsea boots. I love to hit up the Salvation Army when I visit other places or smaller, weird towns. I’ll invest in some vintage Margiela pieces from time-to-time, usually from Tokio 7.

I almost exclusively wear silver jewelry and I like strong, simple pieces that have a little bit of an edge. For inspiration I usually look to early 90s editorials and street style, or one of my favorite Instagrams @she_comes_in_technicolor.

“I hardly wear makeup so I tend to spend a little more on skin, body, & hair products. 90% of what I use is from Kiehl’s - I like the simplicity of their products and they actually work, which is always a plus! ”

ON her beauty routine

For makeup I usually just use an eyeshadow primer, my favorite terracotta-colored eyeshadow, and some mascara. If I’m feeling funky I’ll wear some lime green eyeliner. The one thing I actually splurge on are fragrances, I like to mix them up as well.

on Tom Robbins

I love Tom Robbins, although sometimes I feel like it’s sort of a guilty pleasure. They’re basically like the adult versions of all the books I liked to read as a teen. But they make me feel something when I read them and they make me think about more than what is written there, which is the most important thing for me in a book. And they’re sexy.

on starting her line sanguis ornatus

I really loved Zana Bayne’s harnesses I started seeing around 5 or 6 years ago and asked my dad, who had all of his leather and tools from the 70s when he worked with it, to help me make a harness. He was a little weirded out at first, but went along with it because he was really excited to pass on the craft. From there, I would modify the designs of pieces I would see around the internet or in magazines. Eventually I had ideas of things I wanted but wasn’t seeing anywhere so I decided to start designing my own.

This winter I figured out everything I would need for my own studio in New York and launched Sanguis Ornatus. I make custom pieces for people, and am about to release my first two lines: a basic one with some classic designs and a new line inspired by ancient Rome.
