Meet Sam Tarter

Sam Tarter Passerbuys

Born in Los Angeles, Sam moved to New York City to study fashion design while trying to make it in the concrete jungle like a rock’n’roll love story. While in school, Sam interned at Proenza Schouler, Oscar De La Renta, Elizabeth & James and ICB by Prabal Gurung. She quickly made her way into design as an Assistant Designer at Coach, designing Coats and Leather Jackets all the while continuing her alternative lifestyle in her Brooklyn home with her rockstar boyfriend and 2 teenager cats.

ON HER MORNING ROUTINE

My average morning consists of- slowly waking up, putting on some lively tunes, feeding my cats and then jumping in the shower. Afterwards I quickly get ready and tend to leave the house with my hair still wet. The subway to work has become a therapeutic time of reading before entering the office.

on designing at coach

Design has always been a main focus for myself. In college being located in nyc made it possible to get the exposure and experience from companies that I looked up to. When graduating I fell into a apprenticeship at Coach that lead to a full time design position. My job consists of Research/Concept/Sketching.

on her personal style

I am not a big shopper, but there are a couple of vintage spots that I recommend to my friends; No Relation, Hamlet’s Vintage, Rock Star Crystals & What Goes Around Comes Around. As for aesthetics and inspiration, I always drift towards something that appears precious in the way that it may be one of a kind, I want to love everything that I own in its own particular way.

Patti Smith’s Just Kids, romanticized New York in the 1960s-1970s. Giving a strange appeal to the rough life of a starving artist in love; trying to make it in a place where no one owes you anything, by being none other than herself. This book opened my eyes to a different time, packed with rockstars, artists & poets. I would recommend it to anyone.

on her beauty routine

As far as beauty I like to keep it simple. Morning and night I wash and moisturize my face with Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Cleanser and thats basically it. For makeup I keep my skin pretty bare; a few coats of Benefit mascaraRimmel Match Perfection Concealer, Clinique Blended Face Powder and a smudge of Lancome lipstick. I sometimes use Make Satin Finish Eyeshadow. For hair, every three weeks I find myself chopping my bangs in the bathroom mirror; I tend to like them better when they are kind of screwy.  Burt's Bees Baby Bee Baby Oil and Ylang Ylang Vanilla Hand Balm.

on illustrating

In my free time I like to draw anything besides clothing. Most of the time I do quirky character illustrations with phrases attached to them, or I create designs based on nothing but pure blah.

on music

Music for me has far beyond my upmost respect as an art form. My whole life I have always been a fan, but in the last few years I have gained so much knowledge from my boyfriend. And recently I have started learning guitar for the first time since I was a pre-teen. Anyone want to join a girl band with me?
