Meet Caitlin McMullen

“Born in Tuxedo, New York, Caitlin went to study fashion design at FIT. Her career started when she reached out to Costume Designer & Artist Christian Joy while she was working on The Visitors Must Be Amused exhibit in 2008-09. Caitlin never really left her studio after that. In 2012, Caitlin partnered with Nick Dangerfield & Kosta Krajcev, on creating to.be. Caitlin has always tried to surround herself with fearlessly creative people in NYC. ”

ON HER MORNING ROUTINE

I’m definitely not a morning person and sitting at a desk all day is really hard for me, so I’ve been trying to get up for dance classes before work - mostly with Nicole Winhoffer. She’s the best and it wakes me up so well. I never eat breakfast and usually get shitty deli coffee on my way to the train.

I mix everything without much caution, just going by what I want to have on that day, which at times can look a little crazy. I have a bunch of jackets that are kind of like security blankets to me - super soft leather from interning at Charlotte Ronson years ago, denim from Built by Wendy covered in my favorite band pins, and a printed army jacket that Christian Joy did. I really love Comme des Garcons too, I have one of those great blazers with the big blanket/snuggie thing underneath. Most of my clothes are hand-me-downs from Christian Joy. I get so much good stuff from her, she’s good at thrifting and I’m kind of terrible at it. I recently realized how many jumpsuits she’s given me and haven’t been wearing anything else this week. I got these gold shoes for this space-themed wedding. Turned out that my friend and I were the only ones dressed up.

I like to use Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer,Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanse, and Heritage Store Rosewater & Glycerin Spray. For hair, I like to use Davines Absolute Beautifying Shampoo, Davines Women's OI Conditioner, and Psssst! Instant Dry Shampoo Spray.

Every conscious memory I have is related to music. My whole family loves Bruce Springsteen so he’s always been a huge part of my life. I used to see a ton of DIY shows in Brooklyn. Working with Yeah Yeah Yeahs for the past few years has been super inspirational. Before to.be, my boss used to release incredible records on Playbuttons - bands like Zs, Bow Ribbons, Bubbles, Mount Eerie, Dirty Three. I’ve been listening to Clarence Clarity and Ratking on repeat lately.
